Association for Lighting a Candle (AFLAC)
AFLAC was formed in 1995 with the purpose of alleviating poverty in Sri Lanka. It is modeled on the belief that every person can do something to help another, irrespective of class, wealth and status. Founded upon the quote 'It is better by far to light one solitary candle than to curse the darkness' AFLAC believes that everyone has the capacity to light a candle, be it large or small, which will shed some light on someone else's darkness. As such, we function as a link between your act of generosity and someone else's need.

Little Smiles – Children’s Orphanage
From the website:

The children who have found a home in Little Smile Koslanda are not necessarily orphans in the usual sense. But even if one or both parents are still alive, all the children faced serious harm or even death as a result of poverty which was worse than we can imagine.

There are additional criteria which must be met if a child is to be taken in.

In Little Smile Koslanda we are not only concerned with giving the children food, safety and a roof over their heads. By giving each child individual support and education we want to ensure that they have good opportunities in the future. We therefore favoured a few children who were gifted but totally destitute.

When Little Smile opened in November 1999 the demands on the new staff would have been too great, if we had started off with only "problem cases".

So now the older boys, Prasadh, Madura, Namal and Ajilan, and the older girls, Teena, Gimsha, and Chandrika, help the younger ones, many of whom have been traumatised and are in poor health, to find their feet.

We have ALL learnt a lot. It has not always been easy. We had to dismiss one of the child care workers because she was more interested in what she could get for herself than in the welfare of the children.
